Iowa Hawkeyes – Updates On The Players
The absence of Brandon Wegher
Sophomore running back Brandon Wegher who played in 12 games of the 2009 football season has been absent from the training and practice sessions at fall camp 2010. He holds the Iowa freshman record for rushing touchdowns, scoring eight in all. He is third in that same group for his total of 641 rushing yards and in fourth place for his 967 all-purpose yards. In the records of the Big Ten he copped no 8 for scoring (4-0) and no. 10 for yards rushed (53.4). Wegher was also one of the three freshmen to see action during the 2009 season.
Coach Kirk Ferentz did not specify any reasons for Wegher’s absence but the athlete was last seen in the premises on Saturday, August 7, 2010. No comment could be taken from the coach who says he will wait until the end of the practice season to say anything.
One thing that coach Ferentz said though was that Wegher’s absence was due to his having to resolve personal problems. But Ferentz was sure the athlete would be back in a matter of days.
The matter does not seem to be of great significance because Ferentz has made no expressions of concern. Neither has he hinted that Wegher is no longer a member of the team composed of his ‘three experienced running backs.’
The Iowa Hawkeyes ranked no. 5 by Playboy Sports Magazine
The Hawkeyes have been given fifth place at the 54th Annual College Football Pigskin Preview hosted by editor Gary Cole of Playboy Sports. The top four places go to Ohio State, Texas, Alabama and Boise State. The list also has Wisconsin occupying 8th place. Wisconsin is also a Big Ten member. Nebraska, a future Big Ten member, is in 12th place while Georgia State is far down at position 25.
Gary Cole’s favorite for winning the championship this year is, however, Ohio State who he says will humble the Longhorns before stepping up to win the year’s championship.
Clayborn chooses to stay with the Hawkeyes
The games last season were successful for Hawkeyes defensive end Adrian Clayborn. However, he did not join the 2010 NFL draft for personal reasons. Some things happened after the games which made the athlete hesitate to occupy an NFL position. He wants to wait a bit before getting there.
After the praise and fame of last season, he figured in an incident in which he punched a cab driver for calling him with the ‘N-word.’ He was subsequently charged and pleaded guilty to a charge of disorderly conduct.
Following that incident, he was harassed for some months by a female stalker on his trips through Iowa City and to Kinnick stadium. The stalker was eventually jailed and prohibited from showing herself to the athlete.
That series of mishaps led to Clayborn’s foregoing the 2010 NFL draft. He thinks he needs time to mellow before doing that.
It is a note of interest that when he was a child, his mother did everything to discourage him from playing football. She was definitely against his taking it up as a profession. The position of his mother was influenced by their family doctor who remarked that the boy would never be able to endure contact sports.
A great part of the unfinished business that Clayborn claims he has to finish is spending time with kids at the hospital and playing with young athletes. He is, of course, greatly admired in his community as well for his decision to stick with the Hawkeyes for a while as for his concern for kids.
