The Indianapolis Colts – A History Of The Colts
No one knew that in 1953 in Baltimore, a winning team was going to be born in the Colts. They didn’t start out in Indianapolis; instead, they played in Maryland for years, finally leaving for Indianapolis in 1984. There, they played at the Hoosier Dome, and have been named “horseshoes” because of the unique logo pressed on their jerseys. Their colors are blue and white, and the horseshoe logo is displayed on their jerseys.
The Colts didn’t start out as a winning team, however. When they were first playing in Indianapolis, they had a very difficult time. They lost, year and year again, and a huge depression sunk into the team. However, they finally selected a new coach, Ron Meyer, to replace their old one, and then the Colts took off. Under Ron Meyer, the Colts won their last three games of the season.
Meyer must have brought some magic to the team because at that point, the Colts started to win time and time again. They still lost some games, but ended up with the largest record of consecutive wins of any professional football team. He didn’t last, however; Bill Polian took over in 1996 and started a huge overhaul of the team’s players, getting rid of those who weren’t benefiting the team and selecting new players to help them rise. This turned out to be a very good move.
Polian selected Peyton Manning for the team’s quarterback position. The whole Manning family has somehow managed to bring exceptional players into the world of pro football, including Peyton’s brother Eli Manning who plays for the Giants. With Manning’s excellent playing, the team soared to victory from 1996 to the present, where they still hold the title.
In 2007 at Dolphin Stadium, the Colts won the Super Bowl, defeating the Chicago Bears. This was something of a historic game because of the rain that fell during the entire game, which was the first to see rain like this in football history. The Indianapolis Colts became the first team in the league to win the Super Bowl in both the rain and an outdoor stadium. This was a huge moment for the Colts.
Johnny Unitas and Art Donovan are among the roster of Hall of Fame players who’ve been on the Colts. Their team’s success can be marked not only by its talent and skilled coaching, but also because of their ability to overcome challenges and make very good strategic player choices.
The Colts’ success may also be in part due to their lack of drama and interpersonal conflicts that many other NFL teams face. This team has managed to focus on the point of pro football, which is to play and compete with the proper, honorable sportsmanship that is necessary for a good team.
The Colts continue to carry their fame and title with pride and hold their training camps in Anderson, Indiana. They have continued to be a team that focuses on the heart of the game: good football playing. They’ve never gotten bogged down in mistakes or rookie players, and for this reason they’ve managed to get to the height of success they’re at today.
