The sun is breaking out from behind the winter clouds, the snow is starting to melt bit by bit and around the country, major league baseball fans are settling in for another year of action. It is time to dust off the baseball hats and get out the peanuts and cracker-jacks, as the world readies for another year. And that leads, as always, to a set of mlb predictions for 2011.
It took more than 50 years, but finally, in 2010, the San Francisco Giants captured a world series title. Behind a young and ridiculously talented pitching staff led by Tim Lincecum and the wacky but talented Brian Wilson out of the bullpen, the Giants have to be considered in every conversation about who might win it all this year.
Any dreams the Giants have could be dashed by the Philadelphia Phillies. The San Francisco pitching staff is fantastic, but the staff in Philadelphia may be better. Cliff Lee. Roy Oswalt. Cole Hamels. Roy Halladay. Those names will cause batting coaches to wake up in a cold sweat, and make General Managers around the majors go searching high and low for more offensive production.
Managers are big names in the National League. One big name that is gone is in Atlanta, where Bobby Cox has finally stepped aside in Atlanta, replaced by Fredi Gonzalez. And the National League Central is littered with top skippers, including Tony La Russa in St. Louis, where the Cardinals have some of the best fans in the game, and are always one of the teams to beat. And in Cincinnati, Dusty Baker manages a Reds squad that was 20 games above the break even mark last year, and he is looking for a repeat.
In the American League, discussion is always centered on the Bronx, where the Yankees have CC Sabathia to lead the starting pitchers, Mariano Rivera to close out games, and a left side of the infield with future hall-of-famers Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter. Probably the top mystery about the Yankees is if the starters after Sabathia are good enough to win it all.
The Boston Red Sox were left out of the post-season last year, after finishing 3rd in the East. David Ortiz is back for more, and Joe Girardi still has a top-notch pitching staff that sends out names including the ageless Tim Wakefield, who is 44-years young as the season starts.
The Texas Rangers captured the American League title in 2010 and they have the offense to do it again, but as always the questions surrounding the Rangers have do with pitching and heat. Can they hold down the hitters from around the league, now that Cliff Lee headed back to Philly, and can their squad go another long summer in the Texas heat without wilting before October.
But that is the fun of baseball. It is a long, long season with a thousand questions waiting to be answered. The best news of all for fans of the game is that, unlike some other major sports around the nation, there are no lockouts here, no labor troubles at the moment. Just six months of baseball, waiting to be played.
