It is perhaps the supreme irony in golf that the simplest shot in the book seems to cause the biggest problem to the largest number of golfers.
It is even more difficult to understand if you consider that you don’t have to be schooled to execute the shot properly. In fact, it is the first shot that kids learn in golf. Some of us are even superb at it at this young age. Golf is all about putting balls in the hole and some players get their inspiration from their early successes with the putt.
So why is it such a headache? How to explain then why even experienced golfers encounter all sorts of problems with their putting game? It really is one of life’s many mysteries. This question has been asked for ages and even experts cannot give a satisfactory answer. The saying ‘it’s all in the mind’ was probably never more true than in this golfing case.
Several years ago, an American company developed a golf putting machine. They carried out tests in optimum putting conditions and were gob-smacked to discover that their pride and joy couldn’t hole every putt. They disassembled the machine and rebuilt it after correcting all conceivable defects based on the previous tests. And what happened? It still failed to hole some putts.
