Tennis Court Lighting: A Quick How To Guide

Finding well-lit tennis courts isn’t always easy. Just because some tennis courts have lights doesn’t mean that the visibility and lighting they provide will be good enough to play on.

It’s often the case that the company or people installing a tennis court lighting system have no idea what it takes to create good lighting. The standards followed by professional players are outlined by the ATP tour, but can be used as an effective guideline even for recreational players.

The most important aspect to remember when designing a professional lighting system is the minimum intensity of 70 foot-candles. This is a measurement of light intensity that is inside a 1 foot radius sphere. A system that that achieves this amount of illumination should also try to make the distribution of light as even as possible. This can be measured by taking a series of measurements at different locations around the court.

Any series of measurements taken in order to quantify the distribution of light or intensity must be taken around three feet above the surface of the court. The proper amount of measurements to take is somewhere around fifteen, each at different major areas of the tennis court. Conducting this test thoroughly will help verify that there are no dark spots.

For the most efficient results when it comes to power consumption be sure to take plenty of time to come up with a thoughtful design. One of the best designs involves the traditional four poles on each side. Depending on the facility, the poles may be as low as 20 feet or as high as 60. Most recreational courts will have much shorter lighting poles.

When hitting a ball it is important that the side of the ball the player sees is fully and consistently lit. The only way to achieve this is to have one of the lighting structures extend behind the player on the court. This can be done by increasing the spacing between the poles, but they must be kept evenly spaced. Increasing the distance between poles will diminish the intensity, but it is a trade-off that will often be worthwhile.

Plan a solid design and consult the necessary professionals before building a lighting structure. If you do all the necessary research, the end result will be a well-lit and playable court environment. For more tennis information visit

Antique Golf Club Appraisal – Absolutely Not A Very Easy Effort So Be Diligent

Before buying antique golf clubs, you should get into the habit of appraising it correctly. Unfortunately, most of us at some point have had the experience of giving a club a straightforward once-over peek and then finding out after we’ve purchased it that it might not be the antique that we thought that it was.

Here’s some guidance to help you appraise vintage wooden shafted golf clubs. The most important thing is to start at one end of the club and meticulously work along the club, reviewing all of its parts, guaranteeing that you have got an antique golf club appraisal which is sound and trustworthy. As always, if you've got any questions, there are a great number of gurus available who can assist you with questions or concerns. There are also many great reference materials which make appraising an antique golf club way easier.

Here in this 3 part series on antique golf club appraisal, we have a look at the grip, the end grain of the shaft, and wood rot as factors in deciding the genuineness and price of a vintage golf club.

Inspecting the grip

Only a minute share of antique golf clubs have their original grip. The older the club the more chance it has been regripped when in use. Grips on hickory clubs have a tendency to come in two main types: softish suede or hard leather. The biggest clue whether a grip is original is to search for little tacks (nails) or holes in the shaft from previous fittings at the bottom, and particularly, the pinnacle of the grip. Prior holes at the bottom may naturally be covered by the newer grip, nevertheless it is very hard to disguise absolutely the holes or tacks at the very top. Don't immediately become worried if you think that the grip isn't original. The incontrovertible fact that a grip is not original isn't generally an element when determining the veracity of an antique golf club. We now move on to an inspection of the wooden shaft.

The End Grain of the Shaft

When viewing the butt end of the shaft head on, with the club face lined up as if hitting a ball, the grain of the wood should sometimes run left to right and not top to bottom. The grain of the hickory running in this direction also makes it less likely for the shaft to split when the club is employed in play. If the grain is not in a general left to right direction, it obviously indicates that it was not fitted by a skilled club craftsman, and an authorization (or not) of its vintage nature.

Wood Rot

It's not unusual to find hickory golf clubs with wood shafts that have rotten ends at the butt end of the club. The wood could be literally collapsing or it may just be extraordinarily soft. A gentle pressing with a finger on the tip can show any underlying condition. If the tip is falling away then you can consider removing a few inches off but you would need to grasp by how much before solid wood is reached. Regularly it's going to be clear to you from the very beginning, the club isn't, nor will it ever be, playable. That doesn't preclude you from making it a valuable and appealing display piece. If the wood is extraordinarily soft then few liberal coats of varnish can stabilize it and make it quite hard and attractive for display.

Broncos Avoid Winless Preseason With Win Over Cards

The Arizona Cardinals haven’t looked anything like a Superbowl team in the NFL preseason. They entered their final exhibition contest against the Denver Broncos looking for their first win. The Broncos controlled the contest on both sides of the ball en route to a 19-0 shutout victory over the struggling Cards. Denver managed to improve their preseason record to 1-3, while Arizona ended the exhibition campaign winless at 0-4.

Arizona was installed as -3 road favorites, but NFL preseason bettors who backed Denver ended up collecting the money with the outright win. The 19 points also went UNDER the posted total of 36.

Denvers biggest issue has been injuries, with their starting QB Kyle Orton and backup Chris Simms both out of action. Orton is suffering from a cut and dislocated finger on his throwing hand, while Simms is recovering from a sprained ankle. That provided a great opportunity for rookie Tom Brandstater, and he may find himself playing next Sunday for real. Brandstater finished with 187 yards on 16 of 30 passing with one interception, but moved the team well as the Broncos managed to avoid the dubious fate of the first winless preseason in nearly 50 years (1960). Afterwards, Broncos coach Josh McDaniels was full of praise for his young signal caller:

“For a rookie quarterback, and I’ve had a chance to coach a number of them, he’s really done a nice job. It’s not too big for him, the game’s not too big for him, the huddle’s not too big for him. He operated with that first unit pretty good.”

Brandstater is keeping it all in perspective, stressing that he’s just wanting to help the team:

“Things happen — just last week alone with the Kyle injury. That’s a pretty freak accident that no one can predict at all. I’m glad I got my shot and hopefully I did some good with it. I’m trying to make this team. I still haven’t guaranteed myself a spot in this team and I’m trying to do everything I can to make it just like every guy on the team is.”

Cards head coach Ken Whisenhunt tried to put a positive spin on a dismal preseason:

“We’ll clean it up. I still feel good about our football team and the way we’ve been working.

Kurt Warner, meanwhile, was just looking forward to starting the regular season:

“I never really felt like I got into a rhythm today for whatever reason. I’m looking forward to game-planning a team, putting in some plays and some things we’ve done in the past that we really haven’t done in preseason. I’m looking forward to all of that. But you still don’t leave preseason extremely excited about what we’ve accomplished.”

Arizona will try to put their dismal preseason behind them when they kick off the 2009 NFL campaign at home against the San Francisco 49ers. Arizona will play the Jacksonville Jaguars on the road in week two, while Denver will play host to the Cleveland Browns
