The Dallas Mavericks are coming off their first championship in team history. The Mavericks had a 57-25 record last season to earn the number 3 seed in the Western Conference. They fended off a Portland Trailblazer shock in the 1st round, destroyed the L. A. Lakers in the second round, soundly beat the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Finals and upset the Miami Heat en-route to their very first championship.
Dallas will bring back some of their important playoff performers from that championship squad. NBA Finals MVP Dirk Nowitzki averaged 23 points and 7 rebounds for the team last year and he will be accompanied by Jason Kidd in the beginning lineup. Also returning are veterans Jason Terry, Shawn Marion, Brendan Haywood, Brian Cardinal and young gun Roddy Beaubois.
3 new players could join Jason Kidd and Dirk Nowitzki in the starting five. The Dallas Mavericks added Lamar Odom through trade and signed Vince Carter in the off-season. In the meantime, with the departure of Tyson Chandler to the Knicks, veteran center Brendan Haywood will take over as the starting center for Dallas. Lamar Odom averaged 14.4 points and 8.7 rebounds for the LA Lakers. He’s going to be looked on to provide flexibility and height for Dallas as they have now lost athletic Enormous man Tyson Chandler to the Knicks. In the meantime Vince Carter put up 14 points for the Suns last season and he's turning 35 in January.
The departure of Chandler is gigantic for Dallas as he was the team’s emotional and defensive leader. He put up 10.1 points, 9.4 boards and 1.1 blocks per contest last season. Brendan Haywood will be a conspicuous downgrade at the center position as he averaged only 4.4 points, 5.5 boards and 1 block a night.
Other guys they lost in free agency are offensive spark plug JJ Barea and small forward Caron Butler. Roddy Beaubois will try to fill in JJ Barea’s role as Barea put up 9.5 points and 3.5 assists/game. Although Caron Butler played only 29 games last season due to injury, he was still a heavy contributor when he put up 15 points and 4.1 boards/game before being hurt.
SG Jason Terry is still one of the finest 6th men in the league. He averaged 15.8 points and 4.1 assists/game. Other bench players looking to contribute with gigantic minutes for the Mavericks are small forward Shawn Marion, point guards Roddy Beaubois and Delonte West, center Ian Mahinmi, and power forward Brian Cardinal. This team certainly has great depth in every position except center.
Western Conference Prediction: 1st Southwest Division – The Mavericks still have the skills to repeat as champs and they can actually overtake San Antonio Spurs as the No. 1 seed in their conference in 2011-2012. Losing Tyson Chandler, JJ Barea and Caron Butler is huge, so I do think that they have lost a little bit of themselves from that viewpoint.
Adding Lamar Odom to the team is certainly a fascinating and intriguing bonus, but Vince Carter should have not ever been brought on board. Carter has never been a genuine team player which explains why all of the teams that he played with were losing ones. Though the additions of Carter, Odom and West are good, they cannot compensate for the players they lost. They will continue to be competitive in 2012, but with our NBA predictions we think they’re going to have a genuine tough time repeating as conference champions.
The best way to beat the NBA odds each night is to devote hours going over the matchups to see who’s going to be ready to play and who isn’t. If you do not have the resources to do that, consider signing up for the NBA picks offered by our experts.
