When Butler lost 57-67 to UAB Blazers to go 10-4 for the season did you predict they would go all of the way to the finals, beating the competition’s top two seeds – Syracuse and Kansas – along the way? Not surprisingly. Butler’s wonderful run under the leadership of head coach Brad Stevens added to what was the highest rated season of NCAA basketball in a decade. With record Tv ratings and sponsorship at an all time high, the NCAAB has in no way been healthier.
For fans of US sports – and US basketball in specific, the month of March is particularly substantial, as it encompasses both the College draft – where NBA franchises compete for the signatures of some of the most talented young basketball players within the world – but mainly because it sees the climax of the NCAA basketball season.

7th placed Brigham Young Cougars recorded yet another great win in what has been an eye opener of a season for them when they ended the seven match winning streak of the impressive San Diego Aztecs with a comprehensive 80-67 victory at the weekend, taking them to 27-2 and boosting their chances of a what would be potentially a initial ever appearance within the Final Fours.
Brigham’s win over the 6th ranked San Diego ( 27-2) also saw them take over leading spot in the Mountain West Division standings from the Aztecs, and was possibly the standout result in a weekend of upsets and thrillers within the often exciting and never predictable NCAAB. When it comes to college basketball, my favorite team is, without question, the Vanderbilt Commodores.
Forgetting about the bad memories, here are some of the best moments of the past few years for the team.
2008 vs. #1 Tennessee – A year after my graduation, Vandy was led by senior Shan Foster and Freshman AJ Ogilvy. Two days after Tennessee, Vanderbilt’s in state rival, beat #1 Memphis, Tennessee took the title of best team in the country. Only then they had to play at Vanderbilt and got wiped out.
In 2007, for a long period of time, the Florida Gators were the kings of college basketball. They were coming off a national championship and were undefeated up until this game. Vanderbilt outplayed them and managed to win in a great game.
It should be noted that Florida went on to win the national championship again. So yeah, the Commodores should essentially have been given the title that year. Kidding, kidding.
Vanderbilt was a hot ticket coming into the NCAAB Tournament in 2007. They were led behind senior Derek Byars and Shan Foster. Both players played exceptionally well and were able to beat out a great Washington State Cougars team. This was one game where neither team deserved to lose.
2007 vs. Mississippi State – In Shan Foster’s last home game at Vanderbilt, he erupted and scored 44 points, including 9 three pointers! This game was an out of body performance by a great player who couldn’t have deserved it more.
Another great game against the Mississippi State Bulldogs took place in 2003. It was the SEC Tournament in Atlanta and yours truly was sitting in the press box. The game went to double overtime, yet Vanderbilt prevailed to make it to the SEC Finals.

If you’re into fantasy sports and have never played fantasy basketball, you should know that fantasy basketball is a great way to fill the void between football and baseball seasons. I actually like fantasy basketball the most because I think there’s less luck involved than football (10 weekends vs 81 games) and it isn’t as long as fantasy baseball.
When you are drafting a team in fantasy basketball, there’s definitely luck involved, but usually the general manager who has the most well-balanced team will be in good positioning for the season.
I would say the two most important stats to after are blocks and assists. There are only a handful of players who do either very well and if you have someone who is top 5 in either category, you are in good shape.
If you have a top five pick in your draft, here would be my recommended order for the 2010-2011 season: Lebron, Durant, Wade, Chris Paul, Dirk.
When it comes to assists, the players that do it better than the rest are Chris Paul, Deron Williams, Rajon Rondo and Steve Nash. If you can get any of these players on your team assists suddenly won’t be such a concern.
If you are looking for someone who blocks well, Dwight Howard is far and away the best. His free throw percentage is extremely detrimental to your team though, so I’d go for someone else like Pau Gasol or Lamarcus Aldridge.
Rebounding is also very important, but you want to be careful not to get someone who will tank your free throw percentage. Big men who rebound a lot tend to be mediocre at the line (ahem..Dwight Howard). So if you can get someone like David Lee or Pau Gasol, you will be in good shape.
Finally, turnovers are a sneaky stat that can easily add up. Be wary of drafting someone like Steven Jackson or Brandon Jennings who score a lot, but give the ball up a ton.
